Thank you for visiting the homepage of the Japanese Association for Strabismus and Amblyopia (JASA). I am honored to announce that effective June 5, 2025, I have been appointed as the ninth President of the JASA.
Amblyopia and strabismus, common diseases affecting many people, are curable visual dysfunctions when detected early. The goal of the JASA is to help people of all ages, from 0 to 100 years, to overcome amblyopia and strabismus, to obtain and maintain better binocular vision, and to improve their quality of life.
The JASA, founded in 1964 as the Japanese Research Society for Amblyopia and Strabismus, is dedicated to perform “research into the pathology, diagnosis, and treatment of amblyopia, a developmental disorder of visual acuity (visual cortex) in childhood, and strabismus, which causes binocular dysfunction.” The society has achieved groundbreaking achievements directly linked to clinical practice. We have also collaborated with the International Strabismological Association, which was established in 1966.
In its 60-year history, the JASA has grown to include over 1,400 members, including ophthalmologists, certified orthoptists, and vision researchers. At the annual meeting, we actively exchange information and engage in discussions across boundaries, disseminate useful knowledge, and contribute to daily clinical practice.
Today’s society has changed dramatically from 60 years ago due to the aging of the population, a declining birthrate, and innovations in information technology.
The increase in strabismus is a growing problem due to environmental and lifestyle factors, such as digital device-related acute acquired comitant esotropia, myopia and age-related strabismus, and the consequent decline in quality of life.
Meanwhile, new scientific and technologic developments such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, genomic medicine, regenerative medicine, and methods to control the critical period of the brain will soon contribute to the clinical treatment of amblyopia and strabismus.
Together with our members, I am committed to working on old and new issues and making every effort to contribute to society.
